Dean's Message

The evolution of the law department into a Law School parallels the story of the development of SMU itself. We started out with just a 3-member faculty offering basic law subjects and we now have 30 faculty members offering an array of core and elective courses. We were part of a business school that taught students from all disciplines; we are now undergoing the exciting transformation into a Law School that welcomed its first intake of law students in August 2007.

The international experience of our faculty is reflected in their profiles and they hold postgraduate degrees from renowned universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge and Stanford. The diversity in legal research and teaching is apparent from the list of global publications that the faculty have produced and the spectrum of courses being offered in various areas of law including Business Law, Company Law, IP and IT Law, Financial Law, International Business Law, Life Sciences and Genetic Engineering Law, and Ethics and Social Responsibility. This can only become even more dynamic as we welcome more faculty into our fold and expand our curriculum for the new Law School.

Consistent with SMU's mission, we will adopt a pedagogy that is fresh and different while pursuing excellence in research. The law programme will bear the SMU's distinctives of holistic learning, active seminar-style pedagogy and international and practical exposure, amongst others. Our research and writing will continue to be cutting-edge, forward looking and cross-disciplinary.

The ethic of the Law School is encapsulated in its three core values: Integrity, Scholarship and Humanity.

We look forward to working with all our stakeholders - students, academics, the legal fraternity, businesses, government and society - as we do our part in growing the legal culture in Singapore and to make Singapore an international centre for legal services.
